.) I am reading the book The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. In this book the two main characters are Carter Kane and Sadie Kane who are brother and sister. Their mother is dead and Carter lives with his dad and Sadie lives with her mother's parents because they don't like something that their dad has done. Another character is Amos who is their dad's brother and he is a magician. Another main character is Zia who is a magician and she meets the Kane family by tracking them down into Brooklyn. On Christmas Eve Carter, Sadie, and their dad were having a family reunion in London because that is where Carter lives. Their dad is acting very weird and looking over his shoulder almost every second like they were being followed. They soon ran into a museum and their dad told them to go into an office and not come out until they were told. So they waited and waited until they heard a boom. Carter and Sadie came out and were very confused when they saw their dad casting spells and talking to an Egyptian God. Then they saw the god putting their dad into a coffin and taking him away. There was another explosion and they found themselves blacking out and fainting. Right before they faint they see a man and a woman come over and look at them. They then faint. Soon they figure out that their family are magicians including them and their dad has summoned the five gods of the Demon Days from the Rosetta Stone. The god that abducted there dad brought him to the Daut which is the underworld, and he was soon set on destroying the world with his enormous red pyramid. The ending of this book was very cool. Carter and Sadie figure out that they are supposed to have something called The Feather Of Truth and they have to figure out Set's real name. Since Sadie's attraction to Anubis the god of funerals, he gives them the Feather of truth. They go to New Mexico because Zia wants them there and they spot the Red Pyramid which is Set's main host. When they arrive Amos falls to the ground and they figure out that Set was hosting Amos the whole time. Carter, Sadie, and Zia then starts to fight Set, but Set is too powerful for them and Zia is wounded. Then a dying Zia gives them Set's real name which is Evil Day. Once they figured that out the goddess inside of Sadie transports all of them to Washington D.C. Sadie then starts to cast a banishing spell, but then set realizes that Apophis is the real enemy. Sadie stops the spell and they figure out that he was using him to create enough chaos so he could escape his jail. Set and Sadie then make a deal to destroy the pyramid only if their father would die.
.) I have read many books by Rick Riordan before like the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series. This book though was spectacular. I would rate this book a nine out of ten because I think it has a great plot because of how twists there are to the book. Also it is action packed like in the beginning of the book where Carter's and Sadie's dad is using the Rosetta Stone to get his wife back. This book also has a very interesting story because it incorporates gods. It is also very interesting because the Kane family are magicians but Carter and Sadie are the strongest magicians there family has seen in over three thousand years! The only down side though was that the first few pages didn't really get me hooked onto the book because it was more of just an introduction and not really a scene that is suspenseful and really complicated which I like more. Then later in the beginning of the book there dad goes to a museum in London and uses the Rosetta Stone to summon a god who he will try to convince to bring his wife back. During this part of the book this is all just random because the reader doesn't know that he is trying to get his wife back which makes it just that much more interesting. One thing that I love about this book is how each chapter the author switches the perspective of the book from Carter's to Sadie's. During the chapters with Carter the chapters seem more descriptive in a serious way compared to Sadie because she describes things over the top, crazy, and in somewhat a facetious manner. I think this book is amazing because of it's amazing story and a topic that no other book is about.
.) One theme of this book is egyptian mythology because the author uses this all through out the book like in the beginning of the book Carter and Sadie's dad summons the five gods of the Demon Days and then he is possessed by the god Osiris. Also the god of chaos Set was released and he wanted to destroy the world using this thing called The Red Pyramid. Another example of this theme is when Amos brings them to a branch of the House of Life. There are many branches of the house through out the world, but the House of Life is found under Ciro. The House of Life and all of it's branches are for magicians to stay. Here Sadie and Carter have dreams about things and see the demons that their dad released talking about their plan to destroy the world. Any kind of mythology is a normal theme for the author Rick Riordan because in his past serious he had a theme of greek mythology. I don't mind this choice of a theme of all because I really like mythology especially egyptian mythology because I really find it cool how they think about the after life and how the gods are part animal. This theme is great because it is original and no other book that I know of has this theme, and if another book did it could not be written as well.
.) Every character in this book is amazing like Carter and Sadie's dad because of how mysterious he is and he leaves a great cliffhanger in the beginning of the book. My favorite character though is Sadie because she is constantly saying things sarcastically or in a facetious way. Thing thing that I love the most is her personality because she is really sassy and over the top but can be serious when needed. She also see some similarities between me and her because when the are in a branch of the House of Life she is super curious and wants to go into the library when Amos said that they could not go in. I think I also have this trait because I am super curious and I always want to know things like as an example what is for dinner. Sadie for an example is really curious when Amos says that why can't go into the library. Then later what do you know Sadie sneaks into the library and snoops around. Also what I like about Sadie is that through out the book whenever somebody says something to her she can make a witty comeback like she nicknamed the god Anubis the god of toilet paper.
.) Although the characters in this book are great my least favorite character is Amos. Amos is a really interesting character because he is a magician and he helps Carter and Sadie on their adventure. The only thing though that makes me not like him is I don't really fell like he has much of a personality because when they all are sitting at breakfast the first morning the arrive at a branch of the House of Life he greets Sadie and Carter very drably. Amos I think also is very restrictive and not very adventures compared to Carter and Sadie, and I think in a adventure type book the main characters should fit the genre of the book. Overall though I feel like he is very drab besides the fact that he is a magician. I think the author could have made him more adventurous and fun and then Amos would become a great character.
.) The ending of this book was not what I thought would happen. This book kept me guessing because I thought that they were going to somehow get their dad back. Instead though they sacrificed him in order to save the world from chaos. I didn't really find any clues to leading up to this so it was a huge twist. Something that was really surprising to me though was that Set's real name was Evil Day. The name Evil Day doesn't really seem like a name to me. I also thought his name would be some egyptian. The ending was a big surprise to me and I did not predict what would happen at all. It was a great ending and overall a great book.
