James as finally passed Cherubs greuling basic training and he is on his First mission. The objective for James is to find the secrets of a place called Fort Harmony by mixing in with the other kids there and sticking his nose in places where it doesn't belong. But while he was nosing around in suspected terrorists Fire and World Dunn's workshop, he opens a box of poisonous anthrax. James is sent to the nearby military hospital where his life hangs on the line of death. And while this is happening the danger in this mission seems to escalate very quickly.
I loved this book, it is one of the best I've ever read. Almost every aspect of this book was excellent. I especially liked the characters because I feel like I could relate to the main character, James. He seems like he did what I wouldve done if I were in his shoes. And also I envied him throughout the book because he got to do irresponsible antics and not get in trouble. Also the plot was very interesting and I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next. I loved this author and book that I've read the whole series multiple times.
A potent theme I noticed in this book is Trust. I saw examples of this in the plot and characters because the plot is based on how James had no family left and he was put in a places where everyone was in a similar situation. Because of this they all grew tightly bonded. In less than a year all the characters are closer to than each other anyone else in the world. An example of this is when early on in training, Kerry and James are supporting each others weaknesses and learning to trust the other person with what could be their lives.
My favorite character is James because he is living his life on the edge. When he is presented with an extraordinary opportunity he jumps right into it. On his adventures he does a ton of things every boy would want to do. I think that if I was in his shoes I would have done the same things.
My least favorite character is probably Ron Onions, James' stepdad. I hated him because he was a mean person to James' mom before she died, and Afterward he did bad things to his sister. In the end Ron did such bad things that he was sentenced 9 years in prison.
I didnt expect this ending at all because Muchamore made it seem like James was doing an ok job on the mission and nothing was going wrong. But then when James gets infected with Anthrax and also when the police invade and evacuate Fort Harmony, it totally caught me by surprise. I think having these unexpected parts made me like this book even more. I think the author did give some hints to the ending in the book but they were too subtle to know the first time reading this book.
