What My Mother Doesn't Know
Sonya Sones
Holiday
Just Finished

1. I have recently finished What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. The book is about Sophie , the main character and her first second and third love. Her first love is Lou who she dated in eighth grade. He broke up with her on the last day of eighth grade, he broke her heart. Then she met Dylan that night of the break up. She was getting a ride home from  Rachel , one of her best friends sister. Rachel's sister was also driving home her friend and her friends brother that's when they met. She was the last to get in the car and it was full. All the seats and laps of the people sitting there were taken except for Dylan's lap .She only knew him a bit from school . She felt uncomfortable sitting there not not knowing him but at the same time she felt safe on his lap and it was comforting .  When she got dropped off at her house she looked back at him in the car and noticed he was looking back at her too. Dylan then smiled and then so did Sophie. The next day in the hall there fingers lock as they carry their binders. When they kissed she felt it was special not like when her and Lou kissed her when she didn't feel anything. Soon she didn't feel anything though and they had a awkward and uncomfortable relationship. Also when he walks and his sneakers squeaked she didn't find it cute anymore she just found it annoying. When they went on double dates with her other best friend, Grace and her boyfriend Henry they just try to have small talk while Grace and Henry are holding hand and flirting. Then she realizes on the way home she is taller then Dylan! She could not believe it when they first started dating he was taller then her. She know understood how you can out grow the relationship , well that's what Sophie thought it meant. The next day they break up . After a few weeks of enjoying being single its holiday season and all of her friends are off going to tropical islands while she stays home in Boston. She decides to have her own vacation in Boston enjoying the city. There she meets up with a boy in her class named Robin but everyone one calls him Murphy. He was never boyfriend material as Sophie said not the most attractive person in other words. She then realizes it does not matter what he looks like if they have a connection then it does not matter. She hangs out with him for a couple days they have lots in common and enjoy each others company. After a week he asks her out and she says yet even though hes not the most popular and hes not very attractive. She also realizes it does not matter what her friends think it only matters what she thinks.

2. I enjoyed this book because it was almost like Sophie's journal . I had a clear description about how Sophie felt and it helped me understand the book better. I also got to know more than just what the main character looks like and her personality but i would be able to guess what she would say and what she would do because i had such a detailed description of Sophie of what she wrote in her journal. Also it looks like a poem almost with normal wording . The book has small paragraphs with two to six sentences on  each page . I enjoyed the format of the book because was small and was easy to read the font not small and lots of sentences. Sometimes with books like that I would loose my place and then have to read it again which would be very annoying. Also I loved how much detail there was in the book like i said before with the description of Sophie. It did not feel like a lot of detail with lots of pages describing something not that important but enough detail to keep me interested.

3. The theme in  the book was Romance . I think this is the theme because it shown throughout the book .  It is shown in mostly Sophie's relationships but also between Grace and Rachel and their boyfriends and between Murphy's or Robins Parents. This is also what the story is based off of with all the romantic moments between Sophie and her first three loves. I enjoyed all the cute smiles and small romantic gestures between her and her three first loves especially with Robin. For example when they went ice skating and he brought her to his special private pond . Also when Robin and Sophie draw each other .

4. My favorite character was Robin or Murphy. I liked this character because of mainly how he was around Sophie . Lou and Dylan just wanted to kiss her and have a girlfriend but Robin and Sophie would do things like go to museums and draw and ice skate. I also liked this character because he was kind and a all around good person. I also liked him because of his connections , his mother could make anything positive and his funny father. Also the fact that hes a bit nerdy which makes him more of an interesting character who would rather go to a museum then to a movie. Also I  feel bad for him because he does not have many friends and so I felt that I was routing for him the whole time to not just be with Sophie but for him to become friends with Sophie. I also like that hes more interested in art then sports and is a very creative person which makes him just more interesting.

5. My least favorite character was Grace, one of Sophie's best friends. She is always talking herself and when Sophie and Dylan broke up she kept talking about how great Henry was. Also when Grace wrote her letters to Sophie she wrote how much she missed Sophie and then would say but of course not as much as she missed Henry. She just was always talking about how great Henry was and did not seem to care about Rachel or Sophie. She also was a bit weird like in the book when she wanted her Rachel and Sophie to go out to dinner only wearing rain coats. I thought that Grace was just a bit odd. Also was a bit boy crazy like when she wrote to Sophie about her vacation and how she was meeting all this attractive guys when she was dating Henry! She was never the one who cared about Sophie's feeling and never really understood Sophie like Rachel .

6. I loved the ending to the book it was a really cute and romantic ending that really tied the book together well. It ended by Sophie sitting next to Robin alone. It was cute because she was nervous to tell her friends she was dating Robin and indtead of sitting with Grace and Rachel she just sat next to him confiedently knowing that she liked Robin and that was all that mattered. It was a happy ending also because Murphy would now never sit alone at the lunch tabel but with a friend and a girlfriend.
