Right now in my book franklins mom is starting to have Sarah Kervick over almost everyday after school. Sarah is a new girl at school that is Franklins worst nightmare; her hair looks like it hasn't been washed in years, she smells of filth, she wears the same dirty clothes almost everyday and the worst part? Franklin is a germaphobe. Franklin is horrified of all the possible diseases Sarah could be carrying and the danger she brings to his home. Sarah has also beat up the biggest bully in school...Twice!The reason franklins mom is taking Sarah in like this has not been told yet.
At this point in the book I'm really liking it, its a very funny book with a lot of distinct characters. I really enjoy how sophisticated franklin likes to act, for example; Franklin always edits his moms grocery list to take off all the unhealthy items and add healthy choices. This is funny to me because Franklin is like an adult in a 11 year old body. I also really like the way the author describes every aspect of each character with great detail, for example; on page 10 and 11 the author describes Sarah with immaculate detail immediately letting the reader know that she is "the finest host for parasites Franklin has ever seen..."
I think a good theme for the book so far would probably be discomfort. I chose this theme because Franklin is always afraid and uncomfortable with anything, he picks apart every possible thing that could go wrong for in any situation. Especially when he's with Sarah Kervick. It also appears Sarah isn't very comfortable with going over to Franklins house and having Franklins mom help her out. It hasn't been revealed why yet but I think it has something to do with Sarah's parents. This theme appears mostly in characters, but a little bit in plot also.
As of now my favorite character in the book is Franklin. I like him a lot because its very funny the way he goes about his life. He's always taking every precaution to ensure he doesn't get near any danger. He is also the narrator of the book so it is easy to side with him. One last thing is that Franklin is such a unique character that I doubt I will ever come across a character quite like him ever again.
Right now, I could honestly say that I like every character in the book and I don't have a least favorite character. One would think that Sarah Kervick would be an unlikeable character but she really isn't, the author often leaves you feeling bad for her. What I mean by this is, there is something that has been left out that will hopefully tell us why Sarah cant take a shower at her own house or why her own parents cant buy her clean clothes.
I predict that Sarah will have a very bad home life. By this I mean she is poor or has mean parents or both. This would thoroughly explain why she is always filthy and why Franklins mom keeps helping her by buying her clothes and giving her soaps and shampoos. I think this will be revealed very soon because I'm on page 72 and the book is only 141 pages.
