1) Currently in the book Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen, Brian has just finished killing two rabbits with one arrow. This book is an alternate ending to the first book in the series, Hatchet. Instead of Brian being rescued, he is now alone facing the harsh powers of winter. Before the kill Brian had been attacked by a bear who was after his food. He also lost his .22 rifle due to some malfunctions. Now Brian has a feast of rabbits and has a long hard winter in his near future.

2) Even though I am not very far into the book, it is already very exciting and keeps me turning the page. I feel as if this is going to be a lot better than Paulsen's previous book The River. The survival aspect of the book keeps me extremely interested in the book.

3) One theme that I noticed is man versus nature. So far in the book, Brian has had one extremely dangerous encounter with nature and more are certain to come. While in his shelter,  a bear intrudes and tries to steal Brian's food supply. He then kicks the bear but it retaliates by throwing him across the room. This leaves Brian on the floor with pain all over his body.

4) My favorite character in the book is Brian. He is extremely brave throughout the first two books and so far it is no different in this book. It is a rare thing to find someone with the willpower to survive in the wilderness by themselves with limited resources, and the fact that Brian is a teenager makes it even more impressive.

5) Due to fact that Brian is alone in the wilderness, I have no least favorite character. I also cannot find any flaws in Brian so there is no way I could declare him anywhere near my least favorite character.

6) I predict that Brian will get rescued and return to his family. This will be no easy task for him though. I think that he will get sick and contract hypothermia or pneumonia during the winter. He will have to be very preservative with his food and craft some warmer clothes than his current attire. Even if he does do these things his survival will be a constant and dangerous battle.

  1. Dear Mark,
This is a very well written blog post. I say this because of two paragraphs mainky. These being your favorite character and your introduction. In the introduction you really got to the point quickly by also explaining what is happening in the book. Then in your favorite character paragraph you used the main character as expected but also gave a good over veiw of his character and why you liked him as a character. In conclusion you could have added more info and made the paragraphs longer but overall it was a very well-written and use good detail thank for writing this and keep up the good work.
