The Lightning Thief

Action/Adventure

1. In the book he Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Percy is off on an adventure to recapture Zeus' lightning bolt. Percy is the son of Poseidon and a mortal woman making him a demigod. Being a demigod Percy is sent to a Half-Blood camp to learn how to control and use his powers properly. During this time, Zues' lightning has been stolen and he believes that it is Percy that has stolen it. Percy then sets off on an adventure to the underworld to reclaim Zeus' lightning bolt and restore his families name. After a treacherous travel through the underworld Percy finds the bolt and has to fight Ares to obtain it. He then travels to the Empire State Building to return the bolt to Zeus and clear his name. At the end of the book Luke, Percy's camp counselor, reveals that he stole Zeus' lightning bolt and attempts to kill Percy and fails. Luke did not do this by himself he was overtaking by Kronos and forced into his actions.

2. This book was full of action and really interesting to read but really hard to follow. The amount of gods and goddesses and demigods there are in Greek mythology is overwhelming and is even more overwhelming when put into a story. I had a hard time following who was who and their role. Although it was hard to follow, it was extremely entertaining and I would recommend the book to everyone that can follow a complex book.

3. The most predominant theme in The Lightning Thief is identity. To be more specific throughout the book Percy is trying to find his identity and know just who he is. Being a demigod he has the troubles of being human and being a god at the same time. At the beginning of the book Percy had no idea he was the son of Poseidon and thought he was just like any other kid. Then as the book develops he learns more and more about him and his family.

4. My favorite character is Percy. This is because he is brave and willing to do things most others would not. He also tends to keep a good attitude upon things and has a great sense of humor even if it is the worst of situations. Percy also does not let fear get in his way of the things he knows he needs to get done.

5. My least favorite character is Kronos. He is a brutal man even though he never actually appeared in the book as a person. He overtakes Luke and leads him to steal Zues' lightning bolt which sets fire to the whole adventure that Percy goes on. He also does thing such as lure Percy into the underworld. He was cast out by Zeus years ago and I think he wants his revenge badly.

6. The ending of the book was great. The last person I thought to steal the bolt was Luke. Although it was Kronos that made him do it I was not expecting it to be him. The ending also gave a really nice wrap up to the book. It was fast paced just like the rest of the story and it answered questions you had throughout the whole book and left you with even more.

  1. 1. I felt that this was a fantastic book. It really kept me entertained, and it was really well written. This book was a very popular book when it came out and many kids were reading it. The characters were very funny, and stuck up for each other that I thought was nice.
    2. I felt that you wrote a very good blog post. It gave a good description of the book, and it told me a lot about the characters. But, you had a couple of easy to catch grammatical errors. I think you probably didn't proofread it at all, or you need to do a lot better job
    3. I agree with you when you said that this book was overwhelming. It had a lot of gods, and goddesses, so it was hard to follow. Also with a lot of magical and unrealistic things that go on throughout the book, it is hard to follow.
    4. I disagree with you when you said that Percy finds the bolt, and has to fight Ares to obtain it. Percy brought the lightning bolt himself without him realizing it. He didn't know he had, it and then he was told by Hades. You wrote down the wrong god, and you wrote down the wrong process, by which he got the lightning bolt.

  2. 1. I thought that The Lightning Thief was a very good book, and was my favorite book for a very long time. The characters were hilarious and brave, and I really like Greek Mythology.
    2. I felt your post described the book perfectly, and I agreed with nearly everything you said. It was well-written except for some typos, altough there were some lines that were hard to follow.
    3. I agree that Percy was the best character. He was courageous, loyal, and had a great sense of humor. I feel like Percy was one of the best parts of the book, and he kept it interesting.
    4. I disagree that it was surprising for Luke to have the Bolt. He was very suspicous throughout the whole book, and his manner made me think he was a spy early on. Kronos was very manipulative, and Luke's suspicousness combined with Kronos' wit was a perfect combo for Luke being a surprise bad guy. However, I was also partially surprised that it was Luke because he was so nice, but in hindsight you can see he was Kronos' spy all along.
    5. Luke, I thought your comment was good and I agreed with what you said. My thoughts after reading Mark's post were almost the exact same as yours, and between my post and yours, essentially all of my thoughts were summed up.
